Joint Science Day
The pupils from both Cockburnspath and Coldingham enjoyed a very successful Science Day on Thursday. They were all engaged in rich scientific learning about materials, skin, movement, DNA, magnetism or filtration. The all had fun taking part on very active investigations. They all had the opportunity to make new friends during the shared playtime. Thank you to all the staff for making the day possible.
Thank you to Mrs Easingwood for organising and hosting the P1 ‘Learning Together’ afternoon. Parents were able to join their child in exploring some of the Literacy and Numeracy activities that take place in the classroom. There was good discussion about how the P1s learn, especially about the play-based learning approach. If you have any further questions about this, Mr Bewsey will be available during the upcoming Parent Consultations.
Ms De’Ath has been working in our school for the past 6 years. However, she has been ‘head hunted’ to take on the role of Nursery Manager at a setting in Edinburgh. This will start after Easter. We will miss her greatly – she has been such an asset – but we are very pleased for the new opportunity she has.
A replacement nursery nurse is being organised right now and will be in place for after Easter.
Next week will be the last week of after-school clubs before Easter. There will be no clubs week commencing 27th March.
Your child’s annual report will be sent home next week. We hope you find it useful and informative. Please take some time to complete the comment section at the back and return it to school. You will have an opportunity to discuss your child’s learning during the Parent Consultations.
We hope you have been able to use the new Parents’ Evening Booking system. We have had some very positive feedback which we will share with SBC. If you still haven’t booked your preferred slot, please do so as soon as possible. If you have any problems, please contact the school office who will be able to assist.

We were exploding cans and we were doing experiments for science week on Wednesday. There were bottles with letters on and a black bottle. We were trying to change the colours inside the bottle using powders and tablets. There was a giant party popper and they put candles and icing sugar in it and then they pumped a pump and it exploded. Millie made a bracelet out of cellotape and paper. Hattie helped with the tape. We have moved some things around in our classroom.
This week it was our science week. It started on Wednesday. We did it with fizz, bang, boom. This was a workshop testing chemicals. We saw elephant toothpaste being made out of a tube. Everybody liked it.
There was an enormous party popper. The first time it didn’t work. The second time there was a big BOOM!!!

This week has been very busy with the Science and all,
Firstly on Monday and Friday we had P.E. On Monday we had Mrs Tharme and we were playing dodgeball and benchball; benchball to practise our catching skills and dodgeball to help quicken our reflexes. On Friday we had Mrs Aitchison we were practising our gymnastic skills, like forward rolls, cartwheels and backward rolls.
Also on Thursday Co’path came over to do a joint science day we were learning about magnetism we were also extracting DNA from strawberries and filtering water with Mr Bewsey. We had lots of fun exploring all the techniques of science and making new discoveries. At break we had a huge football match and everyone played with each other!
On the same day 2 pupils Carrie and Merryn did not participate until late afternoon because they were away in Galashiels at a 2k Cross Country run. The whole of the borders was there, they both said there were 52 schools there in total! They had a great time Carrie placing 26th in her race and Merryn placing 35th in hers.
